Why Tire Rotation is Important

Tire rotation is changing the location of your tires so that they wear evenly. Every time you drive, your tires wear down and while good tires are made to last, rotating them periodically helps them last even longer and keeps you safe. Each tire has grooves on it to give it traction, known as tread depth.

Over time, your tires’ tread depth decreases, making for smoother tires that won’t be able to grip the pavement like they should. Additionally, each position on your vehicle requires a different give from each tire–for example, turning, accelerating, and braking put more pressure on the front tires. If they’re not rotated, those tires will wear down faster than the back tires. Uneven tread depth can affect your car’s driving performance, especially its ability to brake.

When You Should Get Tire Rotation

Your vehicle manufacturer’s manual will say when it’s time to have your tires rotated. However, there are a few signs you can look out for. First, the general guidance for tire rotation is every 5,000 miles–it may help to get them rotated every time you get an oil change. A few more signs include:

  • Uneven tire wear: Some tires look more worn than others or there are worn patches in places.
  • Difficulty handling: Hydroplaning, less grip on the road, or decreased responsiveness.
  • Vibration: Vibration while driving, especially at higher speeds.

The Tire Rotation Process

The tire rotation process is quick and simple; you could have it done during your next oil change or other routine service appointment.

Step 1

First, our expert service technicians will determine what kind of tire rotation pattern your vehicle needs. Three tire rotation patterns–Rearward Cross, X-Pattern, and Forward Cross–are utilized based on several factors, such as if your vehicle is an all, rear, front, or four-wheel drive, and if your tires are directional or non-directional.

Step 2

Next, they’ll lift your vehicle and remove and replace each tire following the pattern they chose.

Rearward Cross

The rear tires are moved forward and the front tires are moved to opposite sides of the rear (for example, the front left tire is now moved to the rear right).

X-Pattern

All tires are moved diagonally (for example, rear left moved to front right, front right moved to rear left).

Forward Cross

Front tires are moved directly back while the rear tires are moved up diagonally (for example, the front left moved to the rear left, and the rear left moved to the front right).

Step 3

They’ll look for any other signs of wear and tear on your tires and fix any issues they spot, such as low air, low tire pressure, or misalignment.
